You have to actually VOTE your conscience in order to have voted your conscience. Not just publicly wrestle with it. In the end, it just wasn't that important of an issue to him.
Can one be a pro-life Democrat anymore? How can a person say, I'm pro-life, but I'm part of a party that is officially and aggressively a champion of "abortion rights"? Isn't that like saying, "I'm a pro-Jewish Nazi"?
"So, when the vote comes up for killing Jews in gas chambers, and I vote against it, then I've voted my conscience. If we lose that vote, then I would still vote for the bill because there's so many other good things in the bill."
